Dal Lake

Often referred to as the jewel in the crown of Kashmir, this Himalayan urban lake covers an area of 18 square kilometres. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Dal Lake is mesmerizing with its famous houseboats and shikaras, which resemble the gondolas of Venice. Some geologists believe the lake is a remnant of a Pleistocene oligotrophic lake that once covered the entire Kashmir Valley.
